The video below will show you how to relight the safety pilot light on your gas log system. The pilot light is called a “safety pilot” because if pilot blows out, the valve has a built in safety feature that stops the flow of gas.
This demonstration is done on the G4 burner and SPK-20 pilot system that we have in our showroom, but also applies to SPK-26 pilot systems as well as the other standing pilot models made by R.H. Peterson, like the APK systems.
G4 or G45 Burner with SPK-20, SPK-26 or APK Pilot System
With the SPK-20, SPK-21, SPK-26 and APK pilot systems – you will see a black box to the side of your log system, as shown in the video below.
G46, G31 or G52 Burners with SPK or APK Pilot System
If you have a G46, G31 or G52 burner – you may have the pilot valve integrated directly into the design of the burner- which means you won’t have the black box sitting to the side of the log system (as shown in the video). If this is the case, you may want to remove the logs first to give you easier access to the pilot parts – which will be situated more towards the center area of the log system.

Instructions if You Have the Heavy Duty Steel Handle
If you’ve chosen to upgrade from the standard knob to the heavy duty steel handle (as shown in the video) – the instructions in the owner’s manual will no longer make sense. Here is a link to a PDF Instruction Sheet that we’ve written up, that applies to the steel handle. You can download the PDF and print it out for reference.
